They say this winter is going to be a rough one – on our hectic schedules, our busy roads and, let’s face it, on our good moods. If this is true, then between the ice and snow and the freezing temperatures and slippery conditions, we can expect a lot more of what we saw last year: cars that are either stuck or skidding, as well as stand-still traffic and accidents.

What should we do when the roads are that bad? Here are 8 tips on how to drive like a pro and stay safe even when the roads aren’t:

  1. Make sure you have good tires. Every winter I see, firsthand, so many cars with less than adequate tires. This can cause loss of traction and result in getting stuck in the snow. If you must drive in snow, consider investing in a set of winter tires to improve your level of safety.
  2. Slow down and leave room between you and other cars. If your car begins to slip and slide in the snow, having enough room will give you more time to react, adjust and stop.
  3. Shift to a lower gear. This will help with traction. Consult your owner’s manual for specifics.
  4. If you must drive, plan your route. Avoid hills and roads that are traveled less frequently.
  5. Accelerate slowly to avoid spinning your tires.
  6. The moment you feel the car is not managing well in the snow, is the same moment you should turn around and go back home or to a safer area.
  7. Keep your lights on, your wipers on, and your heaters and gauges in defrost mode.
  8. Reread number 1!

If at all possible, avoid traveling in a snowstorm. If you absolutely must travel, please use caution; slow and steady is your best bet in bad weather.

I hope that you’ve found these tips to be helpful, and encourage you to forward them to a friend or family member that might also benefit from this information. Wishing you all good travels this winter – Stay safe out there!
